Business analyst is one of the least standardised titles in hiring — it can mean requirements documentation, process redesign, or reporting. The resume's first job is to say which kind of BA you are, in the vocabulary the posting uses, then prove it with process outcomes.

  • Which flavour of BA: requirements and delivery, process improvement, or data and reporting
  • Domain experience, since finance, healthcare and supply chain BAs are hired for context as much as method
  • Artifacts you actually produced — BRDs, user stories, process maps, acceptance criteria
  • Process outcomes: cycle time, error rates, cost removed, handoffs eliminated
  • Tooling named in the posting: Jira, Confluence, Visio, SQL, Tableau, Power BI

Common business analyst resume mistakes

Not saying which kind of BA you are

A requirements-focused BA and a reporting-focused BA are almost different jobs. Ambiguity means you match weakly against both instead of strongly against one.

Listing artifacts without outcomes

"Created BRDs and process maps" describes output. What changed for the business — time, cost, error rate, handoffs — is what makes the artifact matter.

Underselling the domain

BA hiring is domain-sensitive. Payments, claims, supply chain and regulatory context are often the reason one candidate is chosen over another with identical method skills.

Omitting SQL when you have it

Many BA postings screen on SQL even when the role is requirements-led. If you write queries, say so explicitly rather than implying it under "data analysis".

Do business analysts need SQL?

Not universally, but it appears in a large share of postings and is often used as a filter. If you have it, name it explicitly and show where you used it; if not, lead with process and requirements depth instead.

How is a business analyst resume different from a data analyst one?

BA resumes lead with process, requirements and stakeholders; data analyst resumes lead with queries, models and findings. Sending the wrong one is a common reason strong candidates get filtered.

Should I list certifications like CBAP or ECBA?

Yes, near the top. They are less universally screened than PMP but still act as differentiators, particularly in large enterprises and consultancies.

How do I show impact when I only made recommendations?

State what was adopted and what followed. If a recommendation was not implemented, describe the analysis and the decision it informed — being precise about your influence reads as more credible than overclaiming.
