Common accountant resume mistakes

Not stating CPA status clearly

Many postings filter on it directly. Put CPA, CMA or "CPA candidate, 3 of 4 sections passed" in the header where both a parser and a recruiter will catch it immediately.

Omitting company scale

Closing books for a $3M business and a $300M business are different jobs. Revenue, entity count and headcount let a hiring manager calibrate you in one line.

Listing duties instead of improvements

Reconciliations and journal entries are assumed. What distinguishes you is what you made faster, cleaner or more accurate — and by how much.

Generic systems claims

"ERP experience" matches nothing. Name the systems and the modules; ATS filters in accounting are unusually literal about tool names.

How important is the CPA on an accountant resume?

For senior and public-company roles it is frequently mandatory and used as an automatic filter. For private mid-market and industry roles it is a strong differentiator but not always required — in which case lead with close ownership and systems depth.

Should I list every accounting system I have used?

List the ones you genuinely worked in, with the depth implied. Naming eight ERPs shallowly is less convincing than two you could be tested on, though matching the system in the job description matters a great deal.

How do I quantify accounting work?

Close days, entity count, transaction volume, account count, error and variance reduction, audit query counts, and dollar value of reconciliations cleared. These are all defensible without disclosing anything confidential.

Is a one-page accounting resume enough?

One page early-career, two once you have entity consolidations, system migrations or team management to describe. Do not compress systems and standards detail — that is exactly what is being filtered on.
